All tyres have various preferences
SUVs are usually delivered with off-road all-terrain tyres. These are usually a compromise between road worthiness,off-road capabilities, and price. Their big advantage is that they can be used at any time of year. The tyres must not be changed every six months, which can be time consuming. However, when it comes to serviceability or handling or icy roads, they do not perform as well as specially developed tyres. Off-road all-terrain tyres always remain a compromise between summer and winter tyres and road and off-road tyres. Nevertheless, off-road all-terrain tyres are the preferred option on German roads; they have good properties for all applications. An SUV must also be considered as a general all-round vehicle. Within the category of off-road all-terrain tyres, there are differences, and consumers can define their own preferences. There are variants that are designed for road use, rough terrain, and difficult weather conditions. It is important to ask: How often do I drive on normal roads, and often do I drive on difficult terrain? Tyres with a coarser tread are not only louder on the road but lead to increased fuel consumption and wear out more quickly. Conversely, tyres designed for roads do not perform well on sand, snow, and mud. There is no one tyre for everything.
When selecting off-road all-terrain tyres, the following must be taken into consideration.
Which terrain that the tyres have been designed for easily recognized by tread of the tyre. If the proportion of the tread that in dyrect contact with the road is especially high, the tyres have been designed for road use. If the majority of the tread is not in contact with the surface, the tyres are intended for use on snow, mud and are ideal for off-road operation. By changing the air pressure, off-road all-terrain tyre can be adjusted to the terrain. For gravel and rock, the air pressure should be reduced by 10 percent. For mud, the pressure should be reduced by 30 percent. Finally for extremely loose terrain at low speeds, the air pressure should be reduced by 50 percent.
Current test reports reveal the specialists for off-road all-terrain tyres. Nokian is recommended for high performance. However, leading manufacturers Bridgestone and Michelin also produce reliable tyres. When it comes to cheap no-name products, certain sacrifices have to be made.
